Manorvale State School
Manorvale State School in Victoria did something totally
different.
They created their own performance with dance and drama for the
Wakkirii festival to show others how to protect the planet.
What are you doing?
Work green
You can start thinking about the work you might like to do.
Remember if you choose something you love, you won't feel like
it is a job at all! How will your work help our planet? We will
need people who care about the earth - meteorologists, engineers,
organizers, vets, teachers, web designers - in every job we can
make sure the resources we use are friendly to the earth.
Every job will be a green job. If you can dream it, you can do
it!
GETTING AROUND GREEN
Walking or taking the train or bus helps because petrol vehicles
emit lots of CO2. Check out these new types of
transport:
✷ Biofuel cars: They can run on alternative fuels like ethanol.
Biofuels are made from grains. They need to be farmed carefully so
that environmental damage isn't caused.
✷ Solar cars: Uses the sun's power to run the engine.
✷ Electric cars: These cars store electricity in a battery to
power the engine.
✷ Hybrid cars: These cars are a mixture. They use both an electric
and a petrol motor.
✷ Green flying: Solar planes could be the future. Find out about
the Sikorsky firefly and QinetiQ 'Zephyr'
LOOK INTO THE
CRYSTAL BALL
What could we achieve if we didn't say impossible?
Thinking about amazing ways to solve problems is exciting.
Some of these things are being worked on now.
What can you dream up?
• Floating green city
• Skyscraper veggie farms
• Flying solar cars - no asphalt roads, parks instead
• Portable green stadiums
• Kinetic clothing - makes energy while you move
• Self growing house
• Special nature warning devices (protection from pets)
• Virtual computers - all in your mind!
• No light bulbs - surfaces that glow and absorb energy
• Home recycling systems - transforming waste on the spot
• Wildlife protective bubbles - stopping poachers
On the agenda now:
Some of these things are starting to happen:
• Sunscreen with nanoparticles protecting from UV
• Laws to ensure buildings & businesses are green
• More public transport
• Water sanitation devices
• Solar paint
• Smarter farming
Roots & Shoots is a global network of youth
making our planet a better place.
Phones contain coltan, a metallic core that is being mined in
the Congo River basin, destroying forests - the habitats of
mountain gorilla and chimpanzees.
Yarra Road Primary School collected over 325 old phones so far and
donated them to Zoos Victoria where they are sent off to be
refurbished before being sold to disadvantaged communities.
